Bassoonist Soo Yeon Lee, a native of South Korea is an active soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra player in the United States, Europe, and South Korea. Besides performing the standard repertoire, Lee also performs music that combines Korean traditional and Western elements. Her enthusiasm for contemporary music led to commission and premiere pieces at Carnegie Hall and the Seoul Arts Center. Her scholarly interests are in music, culture, and performance in East Asia and the US. Research projects include Korean traditional music, Korean history, and American female composers. Recently, she was invited to present a paper entitled, “Musical Tales of the Korean War (1950-53): Heroes, Divided Families and Exile” and perform a bassoon solo piece at the Society of Korean Music conference in Seoul this December. Lee received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. Currently, she is completing her DMA degree at Stonybrook University (SUNY).

한국과 미국에서 활발히 활동 중인 바수니스트 이수연은 선화예고 재학 중 도미하여 줄리어드 예비학교, 줄리어드 음악대학 학사 및 석사 과정을 장학생으로 졸업 하였다. 현재는 뉴욕주립대-스토니브룩에서 장학생으로 박사과정에 재학중이다. 오케스트라 연주자로서 기량을 펼쳐온 그녀는 영국 Royal Albert Hall, 미국 뉴욕 링컨센터 Alice Tully Hall, David Geffen Hall, Merkin Hall등 다양한 세계 무대에서 연주하였다. 음악문화교류에 관심이 많은 그녀는 음악을 통해 다문화주의를 구현하고 있는 21세기 미국에서 활동하고있는 한국 작곡가들과 미국 현대 작곡가들의 작품들을 연구 및 연주하고있다. 최근 그녀는 한국 예술의전당에서 미국 9/11 테러를 기리는 미국 여성 작곡가 아드리안 알버트 곡을 초연하였으며 10월 카네기홀 초청연주에서는 미국에 거주 하고있는 한국 여성 작곡가의 전통음악, 창-판소리와 악기-해금,대금을 표현한 바순 곡 “아리아리아”를 뉴욕에서 초연 할 예정이다.
